Using Face Recognition, Fingerprint, or PIN to Unlock Chartnote Mobile App (Android and iOS)

Using Device Unlock (Face Recognition, Fingerprint, PIN) with Chartnote Mobile App

Applies to: Chartnote Mobile App (Android and iOS)

Overview

To protect patient data and maintain security, Chartnote Mobile App uses your device’s existing secure unlock methods—such as face recognition, fingerprint, PIN, or pattern lock. This article explains how that works and what users need to know.

How It Works

Chartnote Mobile App automatically locks after 6 hours of inactivity to help safeguard patient information.

✅ Instead of managing a separate app password or PIN, the app relies on your phone’s built-in security settings.
✅ This approach maintains both security and a smooth user experience.

When the app has been inactive for 6 hours, you'll be prompted to unlock using the secure method set up on your device:

  • Face recognition (e.g., Face ID on iOS)

  • Fingerprint (e.g., Touch ID or Android biometrics)

  • Device passcode/PIN

  • Pattern lock

Why Chartnote Uses Your Device’s Security

Chartnote does not create or store a separate app-specific PIN. Instead, we use your device’s own security because it:

  • Meets HIPAA-aligned security standards

  • Keeps your workflow consistent with your normal phone usage

  • Avoids unnecessary passwords or PINs to remember

What Happens If the Device Has No Security Set Up?

If a user has no passcode, PIN, pattern, or biometrics configured on their phone:

  • After 6 hours of inactivity, Chartnote Mobile App will log the user out completely.

  • The user will need to log in again with their Chartnote credentials to continue.

There is no fallback app-only PIN, as the design relies on leveraging secure, device-level authentication.

How to Enable Face Recognition or Other Unlock Methods

If users want the most seamless and secure experience:

1️⃣ Open your device Settings.
2️⃣ Add or enable a secure unlock method:

  • Face recognition / Face ID

  • Fingerprint / Touch ID

  • PIN or Pattern lock
3️⃣ Once set up, Chartnote Mobile App will automatically use this method when prompting you to unlock after inactivity.

Example Scenarios

 Device with Face ID Enabled

  • After 6 hours of inactivity, user is prompted with Face ID to unlock.

 Device with PIN Only

  • User enters their device PIN after 6 hours of inactivity.

 Device with No Security Enabled

  • Chartnote logs out after 6 hours of inactivity.

  • User must re-enter full Chartnote login credentials.
